The post Off-Peak: Everything You Need to Know About Peak Demand appeared first on BKV Energy.

Dear favorite customers (it’s all of you),

You’ve probably heard of “peak demand,” but what does it mean and how does it affect you?

Peak demand occurs when demand for electricity from the grid is highest. Demand is measured in megawatts (MWs). For reference, 1 MW can power about 250 houses during high demand hours.

In Texas, peak demand happens in the afternoon on the hottest days of the year. It’s driven by our desire to stay cool indoors even when temperatures outside are sweltering. Running your AC when it’s 100 outside requires A LOT of energy.

The all-time record demand for ERCOT was August 10th, 2023 with a whopping 85,508 MWs. Second place? That was July 20th, 2022 with 80,148 MWs.

Texas heat isn’t the only thing that leads to new peak demand records. As the state’s population grows, there are more and more houses that need electricity every year.

summer-peak-2023

1. When you’re using more electricity, your bill increases. Even with a fixed rate electricity plan.

We did an analysis of our customers’ usage and found that energy consumption basically doubles from April to July. Larger houses increase even more.

2. As statewide energy consumption increases, so do wholesale prices.

Your fixed rate plan protects you from increases in wholesale prices during your contract. When it’s time to choose a new plan, you’re shopping in a totally different market.

3. If demand surpasses the Texas grid’s generation capacity, ERCOT may be forced to deploy controlled outages.

ERCOT has already stated they might be required to implement rolling blackouts this summer. Learn more about alerts deployed by ERCOT here.

What can you do?

You have more control than you think. The single, most powerful driver of electricity consumption is your AC unit.

You can reduce your bill and help reduce peak demand on the Texas grid by setting your thermostat to 78 during the hottest hours of the day—rely on your ceiling fans or portable fans to keep cool instead.

Dear BKV Energy Community,

As summer draws near, we want to empower you with two important bits of knowledge:1. How to understand your electric bill2. How to reduce your summer electric bill Understanding the charges on your bill is the first step towards optimizing energy consumption behavior and saving money. Read on to learn the “what” and “why” of charges on BKV Energy bills and discover tips to reduce your summer bills.

Understanding Your Bill: The Charges Explained

example bill with labels v3

1. TDU Pass-Through Charges: Regardless of which retail electricity provider (REP) you choose, the utility is responsible for delivering electricity to your home. This charge covers grid maintenance and operation costs to ensure electricity reaches your home. REPs do not keep any of this money and pass it directly to the utility.

2. Energy Charge: This is the core of your electric bill, representing the cost of the electricity you consumed during the billing period. It’s calculated based on the kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity used.

3. Miscellaneous Gross Receipts Tax Reimbursement: This charge is specific to Texas and some other states, where electricity providers are taxed on their gross receipts from customers in certain cities. This tax cost is then passed on to consumers as a reimbursement charge on their electric bills.

4. PUC Assessment: The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) assesses a fee on all electric sales, which is used to fund the commission’s regulatory operations and activities. This fee is a small percentage of your bill. 5. Sales Tax: Applied in accordance with Texas state and local tax laws.

Most Impactful Tips to Reduce Your Summer Bills

According to the Energy Information Administration, the biggest energy consumers during summer in a typical Texas household are heating and cooling, water heating, appliances and electronics, and lighting.

  • Heating and cooling: 53% of your bill
  • Water heating: 20% of your bill
  • Appliances and electronics: 20.5% of your bill
  • Lighting: 6.5% of your bill

With this in mind, here are a few actions to significantly reduce your energy consumption.

1. Adjust your thermostat. When summer heat arrives, set the thermostat to 78 and rely on ceiling fans to stay cool. Setting the thermostat to 70 or lower during summer is a surefire way to receive an enormous bill.

2. Take shorter, cooler showers.

3. Unplug unused appliances, or use a power strip. Electronics continue to consume electricity even when they are off.

4. Turn off the lights when you leave a room and rely on sunlight when you can. Switch to LED bulbs that use 70-90% less energy and last 25x longer than incandescent bulbs.

Dear BKV Energy Community,

Spring is here! We hope you are enjoying the nice weather. In this newsletter, we explore Texas’ renewable energy sources and BKVE’s green energy options.

Did you know Texas is the leading producer of renewable energy in the United States? Thanks to our vast geography and favorable climate, our state has been able to harness the power of the sun, wind, and water more than any other state.

Undisputed Wind Power Titan

With an installed wind capacity of over 30,000 MW, Texas can generate electricity enough for millions of homes. The state’s wind farms, sprawling across the plains, generate significant energy while creating jobs and developing rural economies.

Growing Solar Energy Capacity

Texas solar power has grown exponentially, with capacity now over 17,000 MW (second to California’s 39,000 MW). This surge is propelled by sunny climate and supportive policies, which encourage residential and large-scale solar installations.

Beyond Wind and Solar

Texas has also invested in hydroelectric power and biomass. There are 26 hydropower plants in Texas capable of generating over 700 MW. While responsible for minimal energy production, Texas has great potential to expand its energy mix with additional water and biomass plants.

Renewable’s Impact on Wholesale Prices

Renewable energy sources like wind and solar can have both a positive and negative impact on wholesale electricity prices in Texas. When the sun shines and wind blows, prices decrease because they generate power so efficiently.

However, at night when the sun is down or when the wind isn’t blowing, they don’t contribute to the power grid and that drives prices back up. These power sources can be unpredictable, at times unreliable, and the state does not yet have the storage infrastructure to fully take advantage of their generation power.

BKV Energy’s Green Energy Plans

We’re proud to offer green energy plans. All plans begin at 29% renewable energy, but we also have 100% renewable plans as well. Compared to other providers, our green energy plans are typically several cents more affordable. We believe Texans should have the option to go green without breaking the bank.

Market Insights: Spring Weather and Energy Prices

In spring, warmer weather is expected to influence energy demand and pricing. Spring 2023 showed that mild temperatures resulted in reduced demand for heating, contributing to lower pricing during this period.

  • Reduced Demand for Heating: Milder temps mean less heating is required, decreasing demand for natural gas and electricity. Reduced demand can lead to lower energy prices, especially in Texas, where price fluctuations can be more directly tied to changes in demand due to its market structure.
  • Delayed Use of AC: Similarly, the need for air conditioning is less immediate or intense, delaying the seasonal spike in electricity demand that comes with hotter temperatures. This can contribute to a period of lower or stabilized prices before the summer demand increases.
  • Wholesale Price Impact: In ERCOT’s energy market, wholesale electricity prices can fluctuate significantly based on demand and supply dynamics. Mild temperatures can lead to lower wholesale prices, which may be passed on to consumers in the retail market.
  • Operational Efficiency: Power plants and grids operate more efficiently in milder conditions, which can help maintain lower operational costs. These efficiencies may help mitigate price increases from other factors.
  • Renewable Energy: Texas is the #1 producer of wind energy, which can be affected by seasonal weather patterns. Favorable wind conditions increase wind energy production, contributing to a greater supply of renewable energy in the market and further impacting prices.

Note: While milder temperatures can decrease demand and potentially lower prices, other factors such as fuel costs, generation capacity, regulatory changes, and broader economic conditions can also significantly impact energy prices.

Looking Ahead

Hey Texas,

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on 2023 – a landmark year for BKV Energy. In my first newsletter contribution, I am eager to share my insights, both globally and within our organization. If there is a topic you’re particularly interested in or if you have suggestions on how we can serve you better, send me a note at javier@bkvenergy.com

1) The World in 2023: A Time of Transformation
2023 has been a tapestry of significant events: groundbreaking developments in artificial intelligence, an increasingly heated international landscape, higher interest rates, a stubborn labor market, and record temperatures to name a few.

These shifts signal a global transformation, yet uncertainty remains regarding how the world will eventually settle and look post-COVID. What is certain though, is the need for electricity continues to grow, and that adaptation and resilience are crucial. BKV Energy is committed to navigating these tides with foresight and agility.

2) Energy in Texas: A Period of Volatility
Texas wholesale electricity prices are experiencing increased volatility; our state is growing, temperatures are increasing, and efforts to “electrify” our industries continue to ramp up.

Power generation is observing a “feast or famine” effect, driven by the variability of renewable energy and underinvestment in thermal generation (e.g., electricity generated with natural gas). This gives battery storage an interesting growth opportunity, but it will take time before the Texas grid can find stable conditions to decrease price volatility.

Our goal is to navigate these complexities so that you can enjoy simple, straightforward plans to power your home.

3) BKV Energy in 2023: Remarkable Growth
This year has been extraordinary for BKV Energy. From launching operations earlier this year to now serving 30,000+ customers, our journey reflects your trust in us to provide a different kind of energy service.

Our new Premier+ program highlights our dedication to providing you with real, additional value.
